Supporting Independent Media

The Media Project has initiated a formulation of the component aiming at the support of management capacitation of selected independent print media in Mozambique.

A consultant has been identified to assess the management capacity of selected, high quality, but managerially fragile independent print media. Upon conclusion of this assessment, the most worthy and most needy of the media assessed will be invited to take part in a 1-2 years capacitation process, including coaching, training, mentoring and strengthening of computer facilities for management purposes.

Computer Networks Established In Radio Mozambique Delegations

The Media Project has funded the purchase and establishment of computer networks in five provincial delegations of Radio Mozambique.

This support is part of the component related to the strengthening of the management capacity of the delegations in Gaza, Manica, Tete, Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces.

The component has been designed to further support Radio Mozambique in its efforts aiming at the decentralization of the mana-gement systems of the national public station.

Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS Activities

The Media Project is active in its efforts to mainstream its HIV/AIDS information activities geared to the Mozambican media. This was most recently seen through the inclusion of one day HIV/AIDS training component included into all training courses organized by the Project, specifically in those on Ethics, Democracy and Good Governance Reporting, Basic Journalism and Media Management, all held during the months of July-September.

The Project continues to produce and distribute each two weeks brief information updates on HIV/AIDS to all media houses through its “Informative Notes-HIV/AIDS”.

As a result of this, it is possible to see positive changes in the media coverage on HIV/AIDS topics, matching the need on breaking the silence on the pandemic.

Reserve Transmitter To Nova Rádio Paz

With the presentation of a new reserve trans-mitter to Nova Rádio Paz in Quelimane, the Media Project concludes its special support to that station.

The reserve transmitter will strengthen the broadcasting capacity and avoid long off air periods when the transmitter presently in use is affected by technical problems, as it is common in community radio stations, due to electricity variations.

Besides from this, the support package to Nova Rádio Paz comprised of a power generator, two computers, two scooters, three bicycles, cassette field recording kits, as well as training courses in the use of the computers and journalistic capacitation by process coach during more than one year.

A communitarisation process, ensuring a much closer community involvement in planning and programming was among the activities of the coach, financed by the Media Project. A Community Management Committee is now in place
